Aspers Casino was the venue for Apat’s Newcastle ‘Lite’ festival from 1-2 March 2014.<\/p>\n

The two-day mini-festival included four events. First up on the Saturday was a \u00a350+\u00a35 hold’em deepstack; followed by a \u00a325+\u00a35 hold’em tournament. On Sunday there was a repeat of the opening event, followed by a \u00a325+\u00a35 PLO competition.<\/p>\n

Mark Robinson took gold in the first event, beating David Cook heads-up.<\/p>\n

The final hand saw the chips go in on a 8D-2H-9C board, with Cook holding 8H-10C for middle pair and Robinson with 10S-JC for the up-and-down straight draw.<\/p>\n

And, after a brick on the turn, there was a golden moment for Robinson when the 7H on the river made his straight.<\/p>\n

The winner of the second event was Ashuthosh Naik, who beat Adam Pynn heads-up for the title.<\/p>\n

And Naik was back on the final table in Sunday’s main event, along with Troy Rutherford who’d finished fifth the day before.<\/p>\n

Naik didn’t quite manage the double, but there was a silver lining for him when he lost his heads-up battle with a flush to Andrew Hayton’s quad fives. But five wasn’t the magic number for Rutherford, who repeated his efforts of the night before with another fifth-placed finish.<\/p>\n

In the final hand the chips went in pre-flop with Naik holding KC-QC and Hayton 5D-5H.<\/p>\n

The JC-5S-8D on the board put Hayton well in command but a 2C on the turn meant any club other than a five on the river would give Naik the pot, barring a jack, eight or two pairing the board.<\/p>\n

But the god’s weren’t smiling on Naik as the 5C on the river gave Hayton quads and an Apat gold medal.<\/p>\n

Lee Dillon completed the list of winners, taking down the PLO, after a heads-up duel with Ben Taylor<\/p>\n
