Kimber wins the PKR Mixed Max

Jeff Kimber won the inaugural PKR Mixed Max event at Aspers Westfield Stratford from 28-30 March 2014.

Kimber was one of 178 players who turned out for the event, which began with nine-handed tables on day one, progressed to six-handed tables on day two, before settling the tournament with a series of heads-up battles.

The final match of the tournament saw Kimber take 1.75 million chips into the fight against Daniel O’Callaghan and his slightly larger stack of 1.8 million.

It was a heads-up battle that was also a true test of endurance as it went on for six hours before O’Callaghan raised to 80,000 and Kimber called. Kimber checked the QS-9H-2S flop, O’Callaghan made a continuation bet and then called when Kimber check-raised enough to set his opponent all-in. O’Callaghan showed JS-8S for a gutshot and flush draw and needed to hit as Kimber flipped over AS-AH.

Kimber’s bullets held and O’Callaghan crashed out in second place, with Kimber adding £11,248 to his bankroll plus the PKR Mixed Max title to his already impressive list of poker accomplishments.

The pick of the quarter-final heads-up ties pitted Kimber against Eleanor Gudger, who had been unveiled as the latest member of Team PKR Pro before the event began following her impressive online and live results and her seven-year contribution to the PKR community.

Gudger’s best live result came in 2013 when she finished sixth in the ladies’ event at the World Series of Poker, banking $27,045.

Sadly for Gudger, she couldn’t defeat Kimber who then beat Thomas Tebb in the semi-final. O’Callaghan booked his seat in the final after an epic heads-up battle with Dan Bushell that saw him stage a superb comeback after trailing 5:1 in chips!

Bushell and Tebb opted to split third and fourth place, with each taking home £5,000.
