Fives live for Swindells in Didsbury

Leg three of the north-west section of the Grosvenor 25/25 Series from 6-8 June produced a £52,800 prize pool after 264 entries signed up for the three opening flights.

But after 16 hours of play on day two only Rob Swindells remained from the 59 who returned to the G Casino in Didsbury after his pocket fives proved the beating of Esa Pirttijarvi's KD-2D.

The pair got all their chips in pre-flop and the QS-8S-AS-5H-JD board saw Swindells improve to a set to take home the £14,800 top prize.

At the start of play on the final table Daniel Fogg was chip leader on 1,143,500, with Swindells second on 1,131,500 and Andrew Gough third on 977,000.

Nick Holbrook had a 947,500 stack, with Tom Johnson next on 666,000 and Alan Lamont on 613,500.

Pirttiyarni took 550,500 to the final table, with Rajan Vaishi on 460,500 and Alan Tanddei completing the line-up on 166,000.

And Johnston, holding jacks, became the first elimination when he walked into Lamont's pocket aces.

He was followed to the rail soon after when Vaishi found himself second best to Swindells' pocket queens.

Taddei left in seventh after all his chips went in pre-flop with pocket nines against Pirttijarvi's aces. Taddei flopped a set before Pirttijarvi turned a bigger one to leave six players remaining.

Holbrook bowed out in sixth when his pocket nines were outdrawn by Swindells' A-Q, the flop bringing another ace.

Fifth place went to Fogg who shoved all-in pre-flop and walked into Swindells with aces.

Lamont exited in fourth after Pirttiyarni limped in under the gun and he moved all-in behind him. The blinds passed and Pirttiyarni called with aces over Lamont's kings to set him up as chip leader with three left.

Gough was the man to leave next after moving all-in with A-8 only to be called by Swindells with K-J.

Despite Gough flopping an ace, the river proved his downfall when Swindells completed his straight to the ace thanks to the queen of spades.

That left just Pirttiyarni to try to stop the Swindells juggernaut but his K-2 proved no match for Rob's set of fives in the final showdown.
