James Mitchell has added the GUKPT Edinburgh title to his impressive tournament CV, topping a field of 234 entries in the Scottish capital from 19-26 April to turn his £550 buy-in into a cool £33,930 first prize.
Mitchell returned for Sunday's final day with the chip lead and made steady progress towards a heads-up confrontation with day-one chip leader Colin Wu. As two-handed play started both players were extremely deep and it looked like it could turn into a very cagey battle.
And it took about two hour for the winner to be crowned, the chips going all-in on a 6D-3S-8H-9C board with Wu tabling an over pair with pocket jacks. But he was well behind as Mitchell revealed pocket threes for a set. The miracle jack failed to appear giving Mitchell his first GUKPT victory after three previous final table appearances.
