Vicky etches her name in EPT history again

Since the Barcelona Open in 2004, the EPT had crowned 97 champions before the main event in San Remo from 14-20 April 2014.

Of those 97 champions only three were women, Victoria Coren at London in September 2006, Sandra Naujoks in Dortmund in March 2009 and Live Boeree at San Remo in April 2010.

So the odds on a woman becoming the first double EPT champion were 3:97, a tad over three per cent. But just like the game itself, you can't rely on the odds because in San Remo the first double champion was crowned and it was one of the three women who made history.

Just as she had done in 2006 when she became the first woman to win an EPT title, Coren – since married to comedian and panel-show regular David Mitchell – defied the odds again in San Remo to become the first person to win two titles.

Going into the final table as the shortest stack, Coren-Mitchell staged an amazing comeback but at the start of three-handed play still had the least chips on the table. Then after winning a big pot with pocket sixes she reached heads-up play against Italian Giacomo Fundaro with a three-to-one chip lead.

The final hand saw Coren-Mitchell raise with QS-JC on the button and run into Fundaro with pocket aces, who naturally called the bet. But when it's meant to be you can't argue with the poker gods and unfortunately for Fundaro, the JD-7S-QC flop gave Coren-Mitchell two pair.

Coren-Mitchell's bet was met with a check-raise, which she called for 825,000. The 10S fell on the turn and Fundaro checked before pushing all-in over Coren-Mitchell's bet of 1,000,000. All the chips went in but the river brought no help for Fundaro and after winning the 16th EPT back in London during season three, Coren-Mitchell added the 98th EPT to her list of achievements.

For her efforts in Italy in outlasting a 556-strong field, Coren-Mitchell took home a first prize of €476,100 and a stunning watch worth more than €5,000, while also etching her name into the annals of poker history once again.
