Vaidas’ touch pays off in Cardiff

The GUKPT made a triumphant return to the Welsh capital from 30 June-6 July 2014 after a four year break.

177 players entered the £550 buy-in main event in Cardiff, including a strong team of qualifiers from the local Grosvenor G Casino.

Despite the strong Welsh contingent, nearly half of the £100,000 guaranteed prizepool made its way back across the Severn Bridge with Bristol resident Vaidas Sirionas, originally from Lithuania, taking the title. Sirionas and runner-up Mick Corrigan, from Cheltenham, agreed a deal heads-up to split the remaining prizepool and each took home £24,000.

Sirionas and Corrigan became friends after meeting in their local Bristol casino and even travelled to Cardiff together. The pair are regular fixtures on both the Grosvenor's GUKPT and 25/25 Series tours and both players reached the 25/25 Series final table in Walsall the week before the Cardiff event, with Corrigan going on to win.

Sirionas has also been on an incredible run, winning both April’s 25/25 Series main event in Leicester and then the next main event in Bournemouth as well.

After making the final table yet again at the next leg in Walsall, unfortunately he was unable to seal his third consecutive win after being knocked out in eighth place by, would you believe it, Corrigan.

Third place in Cardiff went to satellite qualifier Rob Thomas, who picked up £11,900, with Nik Stylianou in fourth and Jamie Fisher fifth.
