Biessek bags Luton 25/25 trophy

Ellie Biessek, who became the first and so far only woman to take down a GPS main event when she won in Newcastle last year, added a 25/25 Series crown to her list of titles with victory in Luton from 6-8 June.

A total of 188 players bought into the Luton 25/25, creating a £37,600 prize pool, with Biessek the chip leader with an 800,000 stack going into the final table. Hot on Biessek's tail were Andrew Christos (775,000), Ibrahim Ullah (750,0000) and Vikrum Mehta (750,000).

Martyn Tawn was fifth in chips on 505,000, followed by Anthony Chalkley (365,000), Mike Boucher (363,000) and Yaswant Shah (310,000), with
Jonathan Blissett bringing up the rear on 78,000.

Only four hands into the final-table action and Blissett was on his way out, having moved all-in for his final three big blinds with A-9, which was called by Christos in the big blind with J-3. The 9-J-K-K-8 board failing to rescue Blissett.

Tawn was the next out after making it 60,000 to go from under the gun and seeing Christos three-bet enough to put him all-in. Tawn called off his last 400,000 with pocket jacks with Christos holding queens. To add insult to injury Christos binked another queen on the flop left to leave Tawn drawing extremely thinly and he was dead by the river.

Ullah lost a large pot against Christos before jamming for 10 big blinds from the cut-off with A-J and was called on the button by Biessek with A-6. Ullah might have had Biessek dominated pre-flop but with the board running out 6-7-3-7-8 it was he who busted out in seventh place.

Six became five with the elimination of Shah who decided to three-bet to 90,000 and leave only 4,000 behind after Mehta raised to 60,000. Mehta decided to call instead of putting his opponent all-in but he did set Shah in on the 4-6-4 flop.

Shah called with Q-J against Mehta's 8-6 and when the turn and river brought a king and a four his tournament was over.

Next out was Chalkley who pushed his last five big blinds in with A-Q and was looked up by Biessek from the big blind with K-3. Biessek flopped two pair and when the turn and river failed to come to Chalkley’s rescue it was game over for him.

Soon after Chalkley’s exit, Boucher was following him to the rail when he jammed 11 big blinds into the middle from the small blind with Q-8. Mehta called with A-9 and an ace on the turn left Boucher drawing dead.

Christos finished in third place getting all his chip in pre-flop with A-K against Biessek's A-2 but a deuce on the flop was all Biessek needed to send Christos home.

As the heads-up duel got underway Biessek held 2.5 million chips to Mehta’s 2.2 million and it was not surprising that they struck a deal to split the remaining prize pool evenly, both taking £9,025.

The final hand saw Biessek open-shove from the small blind with pocket tens and Mehta call with A-6, the board bringing him no assistance leaving Biessek to take home another trophy for her mantelpiece.
